As a child I was drawing on anything that was available.  But in the back of my mind, I was always wanting to paint on canvas.  In the early 1990’s I studied the art of Sumi-e followed by  a photography course at Fairchild Botanic Gardens in Miami.  The beauty of nature unfolded before my eyes.  Beginning in 1999 I was mentored by Clyde Butcher, an Ansel Adams Award Winning Photographer.  It was then that the camera, as an extension of my eye, allowed me an intimate study of nature, so I could formulate my ideas. Photography became an integral part of my “seeing”.  My paintings came forth a few years later, using examples that I saw through my camera’s lens.

In 2003 I began painting nature on canvas.  As a mostly self taught artist, I feel fortunate that I paint my own way.  Painting allows a suspension of my time, a meditation of the beauty of nature, so that my exploration can communicate the vibration of color, light and music.  It is my belief that such paintings will help to heal illness.

As a member of the Board of Trustees of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas Biscayne Nature Center in Key Biscayne, Florida, and as one of their Artists in Residence, art continues to be my focus. Here, in the winter, I have taught children from the inner city to record what they have seen on their adventures by the sea.  As in my childhood, we work on large pieces of recycled cardboard, cut from boxes, and then primed with house paint.  This serves as an example that their “canvas” can be easily accessed when their ideas surface and that their materials are neither conventional nor costly.  Empowering our youth of today makes for successful adults.

Since 2003 I have exhibited in Miami and New York City as well as local shows in our South Jersey area, including a one woman show at The Ocean City Art Center, Great Bay Gallery in Somers Point, a 7 month exhibition of 76 of my original  paintings at Shore Medical Center in 2016 and Nashville North Studios.

My husband, Jim Allison, and I have opened Nashville North Studios, a music and art studio in Linwood, NJ.   Here he records and produces music and I display my art along with  other regional artists, creative writers and musicians.   You are welcome to visit our studio in Linwood Greene, 210 New Road, Linwood, NJ, as well as my website www.JAMSArtworks.com. and www.NashvilleNorthStudios.com.  Please join us at NNS for our Monthly 4th Friday Art and Music Receptions.  Call 609-504-5044 for more information or visit us on Facebook at Nashville North Studios, Home of NNS Records.
